Do you have a timing light? Is it just the basic kind or does it have a dial on the back for setting it's own timing?
I'm assuming it's a basic timing gun.
You need to short the service check connector first. The service check connector is the little 2p connector behind your dash that you use to check check engine light codes. You need to short it with a wire or a paperclip or something.
Find the little black rubber plug on the front of your engine block. It's right on the flat area that says the engine code, to the left of the headers. Take the plug off.
Hook up your timing light, it usually has a positive and negative cable to hook to battery power and a signal wire that clamps around your spark plug cable that goes to #1. It's the plug that has a little 'A' inside a cricle beside it on the distributor.
Make sure your service check connector has been shorted and start the engine. Run the engine rpm up for a while until the engine is warm and let it idle.
Point the timing gun at the timing window. Inside the window there's a site that looks like a gun site. If everything is still stock you should see a red line in the window on the flywheel. This is 15 degrees before top dead centre.
Loosen the main bolts on the distributor and rotate it back and forth slowly while looking at the window. Moving it towards the firewall will advance the timing. You should move it a little bit tighten everything up and drive it around. It's dangerous because it's hard to notice when our engines are knocking and you don't want to advance the timing so much that it does this. Moving it up three degrees is about the most that I would do it.
