View Full Version : Which tires to go with??

Someone told me to go back to honda and complain that they sold me a tire that was to big for the car.. 215/45 17 So I did and they told me that they will get me 4 brand new tires for free.....
My prob is that my car is going to be lowered soon (this weekend) and I may have a rubbing problem (offset of my rim is to big) so I could either go with a 215/40 17 or 205/40 17. The smaller the rubber the better...
but.. I've heard something like "the prelude is heavy and the 205 tire might not be able to hold the weight" Is that BS??
Which one do you think I should choose??

Err.. the 205 can "hold the weight"... Ha ha .. what is that supposed to mean anyway? lol.. The only issues here to consider are:
overall diameter, if you will rub, if the tire will fit on the rim. Otherwise it won't make a difference if it's a 235 or 185 wrt to "holding the weight of the car" he he.. good one..

Actually..."holding the weight" ....is an important factor.
But the guy said it wrong. It doesnt have to do with the width of the tire but moreso the sidewall.
I had a conversation with John from Talon Tire about this in regards to me dropping my sidewall to 45 and he mentioned that there was increased risk in sidewall bubbling etc.
The overall sidewall strength has to be able to support the car. (especially in front).
It made sense to me and thats why i went to stock size on my stock rims.
I'd say to pick a tire AFTER you lower the car....or get an experts opinion! It could happen that the sideall is too big, in which case u need 215/40/17...or if its too wide then 205/45/17...or if its both! 205/40/17!
make sense?

Get the 205 I think they are perfect for the MR7's...
BTW for example.... my tires (205/40/17) are rated at 992 LBS each my car weighs 2690lbs plus ME :) and gas so lets say 3000 lbs... is this bad??? Good?? perfect?? IT gives me 900 lbs of leway?? anyways what are your thoughts on this...
Also They have a max pressure of 44psi what do you run yours at ??

When first got my 5Gen in 1999, I bought eibach pro-kit, 17 x 7 Konig Monsoons w/ 205/40/17 Dunlop SP Sport 9000. They were the best tires I ever owned. However, there was not enough rubber to protect the wheel. Also, because the low profile, the tires looked tiny for the car. After I sold them and got Kumho 205/45/17 and they did have enough rubber to protect the wheel. My opinion, go with 205/45/17 or 215/40/17. Most 5Gens are running 215/40/17.

I'm just curious, when you say "no enough rubber to protect the wheel" what exactly do you mean? Did you damage the rim while hitting a pothole? Or scraped the side of the wheel? What psi did you run in the 205-40-17?
Falcone, in my 205-45-16's I run about 38 front and 34 back.
i run 33 psi on snows factory size...
33 psi on 215/40/17 in summer...
dunno why but thats what my friends all tell me to keep it at

First summer, I had to make sure that when I entered a parking lot I did it sideways, because the entry was about the same height as the rubber. Around the second summer I didn't hit a pothole but a recessed manhole cover which scrapped the outside of the front wheel. Third summer as my original shocks were wearing out, the suspension was getting harder I hit another recessed manhole cover going over some rough pavement and bent the lip of the front left mag. I had to replace the wheel. When I replaced the wheel, i changed the tires to 205/45/17. keep in mind that I'm lowered with the Eibach pro-kit. i keep the tire pressure about 36 psi all around. I never had a problem with the rears, always the fronts. Personally, I've seen the recessed manhole covers in the G.T.A, and there about double than where I lived in Montreal. Also, for the look the 205/40/17 look tiny on a car this big. If you have a body kit on the car, then you should definetly not get the 205/40/17.

I was under the impression that filling them to the Max PSI was usually preferable??... i guess is it best to play around with them then...also anyone know the average weight for a 20540r17 tire???

i was told never to max it out or even go close...
i guess the logic behind keeping it at 33 is that it is flatter and grips better?

Actually to be more specific, the more contact patch you have to the ground, the more grip you have...

I've got 205/40/17 on the front and 205/45/17 on the back...I run them at around 40psi.
I just weighed my wheel/tire combos on the weekend....
base wheel/re92 ----> 39 lbs
17x7 RH Evo Z5000 & 205/40/17 Kumho ----> 39 lbs

I'm going with 215/50/16's on my stock rim.....but not as soon as I want though...shocks first...then to feel how the shocks on stock rubber feels...and then I'm getting tires so that I can really appreciate the difference.

how do you figure? i'm saving almost $20 per tire to go with 205/45 instead of 205/50, just by saving some rubber off of the sidewall. at 215/50 you're adding more rubber to the tread part of the wheel and the sidewall, so i would expect them to be at least $20 more per tire. i don't even see that size listed on the gb :P

WOW!..I want to go to 18's myself What's the offset on your rims? Lowered? Which tires? I'd appreciate any advice.
I'm looking at 18x7.5" with a +45mm.

Actually I was asking Prelude1997 about his setup. Couldn't find anything in the FAQ about his car at all. The 'cut&paste' replies from Talon Tires that is frequently used by members of the TPC is really getting old. (See first response in FAQ to 'a question to u wheel pros' & the entire thread on approved wheel widths. C'mon guys, talk to people instead of saying see FAQ.

If I had the money I'd buy these...

Michelin Pilot Sport. They cost too much though.

i would get these as well if money wasnt an issue...i had T1's before and those were great and also heard good things about the paradas as well
but for 17 i would go with 215/40/17 w/ an offset of at least 45..
