View Full Version : wheel/tire noise....

the past couple of months I've had an annoying vibration/droning/grinding sound coming from the rear wheels. I recently put all my stockers back on and the noise was gone.
now, I originally only had hub-centric rings on the front wheels cuz that's all that came with my 17's....I picked up a set of rings from Wheels Direct on the weekend (crappy plastic ones) and put them on the rear wheels.... the noise is still there.
the rings that WD sold me are thin crappy plastic ones, and the two that came with the wheels are thicker and much better quality.... could this be a problem?
I've been riding on my 17's for quite a while now, and the noise wasn't there in the beginning....rear tires are in great shape too!
somebody help, PLEASE! :(

is the noise there constantly when cruising or only when breaking?

I get this noise from my winter tires.. only at about 110km/h.. and only from the rear right wheel.. Will see what happens when I go back to summer tires..

hmmmmmm
where'd you pick up your 17's from?
Trying getting them to send you the same rings that came with the front. Try those on the rear and see if the prob is still there.
Is the car running smooth? No heavy vibration from the rear due to the tires?

I'm also using those stick on wheel weight thingies...is it possible that I might have lost some? what about a bent rim?
the car doesn't seem to be vibrating or riding rough...it's just the noise!

I'm not on good terms with the dealer I bought my wheels from, which is why I went to WD for the rings.

well bent RIMS can cause it.... but if youre saying its coming from both rear tires then I doubt it.
Those stick on thingies.... might be it actually. Check em and see if theyre still good.
Try rotating your front/rear tires and see if the prob is still there

I can't pinpoint if it's both rears, or just one....I originally took this problem to honda, and they swapped the front/back and told me the noise moved to the front.

hmmm.... has got to be something that you got done to the rears and not to the front.
Must be one of the ones you mentioned before... well thats my guess anyway dude.

Emilio, contact John at Talon, he might have some ideas for ya... and he can provide you with metal rings as well... drop him a line!

Dude, sounds like you have a bad tire, its might have a shifted ow warped belt causing you to get a droning noise, I got the same problem with one of mine. Check for uneven tread wear, or run your hand across the tread trying to feel any bumps. You could also jack up the car spin the tire and see if you notice any "wobbling" from the tire

What is the update?

I spoke to John and he recommends that I rotate the tires from side to side....I'll have to dis-mount and re-mount the tires, but I'll try anything to get rid of the noise!
thanx again to John @ TalonTire for his prompt feedback!

it cost me like $30 to get 4 cheap looking plastic hub centric rings as well...

Dude, I was thinking about this again... have you consider that it could be your rear bearings? I had a grind noise that would come and go... it would be more noticable in the mornings and cold weather...

2 weeks ago my garage door went kaput and since then we've been parking our cars out on the dirveway.
I let the car sit on the driveway the whole day we had our last snowfall and a bit on the next day as well! When i finally did take the car out...i got this really really wierd and scary noise coming from the front (it seemed) of the car.
It sounded like i was dragging something metal! I stopped the car and had a look under the car but coulld see nothing! I took it really slow around the block listenin to the car....then i took a left turn and all of a sudden the noise just stopped!
Im pretty sure it had to do w/ one of the front wheels! But i dont know what? Perhaps the bearings were frozen for a bit then upon movement/friction they warmed up and broke lose.
