View Full Version : Amsoil or Mobil 1 5W-30? By-pass oil filter?

Which would be better for a 2001 'Lude, Amsoil or Mobil 1 5W-30? Today I picked up 5 quarts of Amsoil and an Amsoil oil filter for my 'Lude, and the price is very similar to Mobil 1's.
Also, has anybody installed an Amsoil by-pass oil filter in their 'Lude? The Amsoil dealer said there's no space for it, but there must be some way of installing it!
Any help would be appreciated...

How much for the oil and filter? I thought Amsoil was more expensive?

I can get a 1 gallon jug (3.85L) for $35, and a quart (0.95L) bottle for $10, plus the filter for $18.
Amsoil 5W-30 (5L): $45
Oil Filter: $18
I'll change the oil myself. I talked to 2 Honda techs while my car was in for a checkup and they said that Amsoil is superior to Mobil 1 and they'd definitely recommend that for a Prelude.
They also didn't recommend 0W-30 or 10W-30 because the engine's tolerance is really small and the 0W would be too thin and 10W too thick.

That is more expensive.. 5L of Mobil 1 5w30 is usually about $26 for 4L and $6.50 for 1L. Honda oil filter $7.
Doing it yourself, cold and dirty.

Yes, but you add tax to that and 5L of Mobil 1 will cost you $37, whereas Amsoil is $45, I get it for $40 cos my buddy's a dealer.
The oil filter is expensive, but better than Honda OEM.

Has that been proven/tested by someone other than Amsoil? Just curious.

Yes, it's a secondary oil filter, it filters much slower but much better than the small one we have.

The single element by-pass filter is huge, something like an 18-wheeler's oil filter (like a 2L bottle of Coke), I have no idea where I'd put it, but it does an amazing job at saving your oil/engine.

That looks interesting.. keep in mind that if your car is udner warranty, and you use this filter set up, Honda only recognizes "official" Honda filter. They might give you a hassle if some oil related problems develop.
Here is a good page with oil info. Amsoil seems to be just a little bit better than Mobil 1 5w30. And of course any synthetic oil is better than conventional. (no matter what Rob says. :yuck: :D )

I used 2 have a by-pass kit for my old cutlass . had a big long truck oil filter, mounted on the firewall. For the honda, hmmm i was thinking about doign this so I could use a bigger filter and increase the oil capacity. I just change my oil often so I dont bother. But It was a breeze 2 change the filter on the old cutty!!

Installing the by-pass filter requires a oil filter relocation kit (over $250). There's no room for the kit behind the block, so this is the only method of implementing one.
I use Amsoil 5W30 and Mobil-1 oil filters on the Lude now.
Amsoil products are really nice, and work well, even though the price is a bit on the higher side. The only thing I don't agree upon is that they recommend those super extended drain intervals while using their product. That might be fine for regular mild driving, but I wouldn't suggest it if you like hitting VTEC.

BB1-4Ws, where can you buy the Mobil 1 oil filter? Do you use the regular or oversize one? Any reason (other than price) for using a Mobil 1 oil filter instead of the Amsoil one?
Also, how often do you change your oil?
Thanks

I had to order the filters from the US, and they're the oversized ones. It cost me about $15/filter after taxes and shipping.
I don't drive my car a lot, but try to change my oil every 3 months or 5000kms (whichever comes first). If I'm attending a trackday or autocross, I change all fluids before and after.
It gets pretty expensive ($200) to drain and fill everything, but I only drive the car for about 6 months of the year.
The car looses about a 1/2-3/4 for every 5000kms (accumulated). I usually check my engine oil every friday morning when I take my time to go to work. :)
I used to use Castrol Syntec 5W50 and OEM Honda filters with the same drain interval. Except, I change the filter at 3000km and top up the oil. Found there was no benefit from switching besides costing a bit more, but I just wanted to try it.

BB1-4WS, it just dawned on me: if I install an AEM short ram air intake and take out the resonator (I think that's what it's called), would that give me enough space for a by-pass oil filter? I've no idea how big the resonator is, but maybe you can shed some light on this...
Thanks

It's huge.... Lots of space after you take that out... but it's not easy to get to... you could also put the oil bypass on the opposite side as well...

The kit can mount just about anywhere. I agree with Grant that you should choose a placement that's easier to access.
Just keep it away from any moving/rotating assemblies for safety sake. Most people choose to mount on the firewall, or front cross member.
I suggest placement on the firewall where your cruise control module is. There should be enough space there, or just get rid of it like Mark did. :P
