Get a prelude S model. Dirt cheap on insurance, and you can get them dirt cheap! Then swap a JDM H22 motor/trans when you get the money. Thats the best way IMO. Just make sure the BODY is in good condition,

New there soon to be member...

First off ... it's not going to matter much which you buy insurance wise... number one you are 17... with a G2 and you are buying a sports car, 2 doors and u are going to get raped... Figure this out... I own a 1991 prelude... No Vtec and i am paying a bundle on insurance and it insured under my mom... you are going to be looking at 4 grand a year insurance by yourself so think about that :( Not to bash you of anything but why would you drop out of school for a car anyways... This is my philosopy think of it as you will... STAY IN SCHOOL :) forget about the car and buy a CIVIC tehe..

I am 21 and I could easily sell my car and have enough money for an SRV but why I love it... and even though it dosent get the respect that it deserves because it's a lowly 3rd gen ? I wouldnt trade it in... 109 k kms with the last 20 k done by me...Super condition... NO CAR PAYMENTS.. NO PROBLEMS... and ALOT of money left over for MODS...I will probably have my car for another 4-5 years before i sell it :)

BTW you probably looking at 16-18 for an SRV and 3-5 grand for a Vtec engine .

Stay in school and get a good job and eventually buy an even better car than the Prelude....

i agree with grant. get back in school and don't worry about a car until later on. a car's gonna last you 10 years max. an education lasts you a lifetime and gives you the opportunity to get whatever car you want. why settle for a lude now when you can have an nsx in a few years?

but if you do plan on paying for insurance by yourself i hope you have either one hell of a good paying job cuz i'm paying close to $6000 a year and i'm 19 and under my mom's corolla. if i was under the lude i'd be going through KY like no tomorrow! :D

I say civic because its cheap. TONNES of aftermarket USED parts for cheap. Also tonnes in the scap yard 2 get parts from. Also its CHEAP and with a Swap you can make it real fast! If I was in highschool and i was on a budget, this would be my choice. 89/90/91 Civic DX. Dirt cheap on insurance! Some people would say "dont swap cuz then if u crash it and insurance finds out, bla bla bla" but its up 2 you. Again it depends what you want! I know when I was in highschool I wanted SPEED, I did not care about how my car looked, I just needed a FASt car 2 smoke the guys vette in my school. So whatever, its up 2 you.

Well first of all why don't we ask him what job he has...say he's that dude that owned the online pr0n company, I doubt we'll tell him to go back to school except for oh recreation.

Ok.... I'm not being pessismistic, but how are your driving skills. When I first got my car I smashed it up big time. Are you willing to risk smashing up a car you worked so hard for? I'm just saying what if.

No matter what your insurance is going to be high....no matter what. Between a S that you're looking at versus SRV, I doubt there's gonna be much difference. Now that brings us to the cost of the car. With $11,000 I honestly can say you won't be able to buy a SRV. The market demand is too high with low supply. You might be lucky to find a S for that price. With that I do agree you should get just the S. You can save up your money and like your friend says do an engine swap for a JDM engine. That's what your friend meant by JDM, not the left hand right hand drive thing you're talking about.

I dunno the interior option on the 4th gen but why don't u just go car hunting and you'll be able to see for yourself. Isn't the best part of a car besides driving one is shopping for one?

With that you better look at long term budgetting including gas, maintenance, insurance, licensing fees, emission tests, and depreciation of the car.

phatz
02-12-2002, 11:46 PM
Dont worry about power and smashing it. Just be smart and take it easy. When I was 16 I had a 80 Cutlass with a 350hp motor in it and 3.73 gears 2 top it off. Also I was driving my brothers GrandNational all the time. You just have 2 understand how the car reacts 2 the power. That would be my last concern.

Jarek
02-12-2002, 11:53 PM
Is there a difference in suspension between the 4th gen S and Si? Also what about interior features? S had steel wheels, smaller brakes also right? If the insurance difference is not that much, get the Si and save up for a H22a swap. That would probably cost $3-4 K.

Lude_Behaviour
02-13-2002, 02:06 AM
My first car was a civic and I was satisfied with it. If you want more power swap in an engine. Also, since you are a new and presumably inexperienced driver you may run into the odd fender bender which could put you on the brink of financial ruin. You want to own the car not for the car to own you.

Alot of people on this board are older, have finished school, and work so they can afford there cars. Or else, there from scarborough or markham and there daddy and mommy bought it for them. :D

In any case stay in school and buy something where you won't have to make payments on it. You have enough things to worry about while going to school besides making car payments. The car will eventually rust and be a ruin but your education will last you a lifetime.

Ok I have a headache really from reading that now. I just had my midterm too.

No I don't mean that a 17 yr old with a successful porn site should skip out on school, i like school but there's more to life is a school on it's own and school is just a place where people deem the facts are provided in a non biased way (my ass).

Anyways I just suggest that you have the car under the insurance policy for the whole family. That way you can say you're the principal driver of the corolla instead of the prelude. I dunno how much this will save you since I didn't do that.

Aren't all interiors the same? Only difference if it's leather or not?

Sorry that's my fault, I mean SR. There are three different models S, SR and SR-V.
Look guys can someone just outline what the differences are between the S and SR and how much it would cost for an H22a swap? Forget the advice, he'll do what he wants.
The only thing I know for sure is that the S has smaller brakes and steel wheels.

And when you type liKE ThIIISSssS it is very difficult to read, and for me personally anyways, I am reluctant to help someone that can't communicate what the need in an intelligent manner.

I am sure you make perfect sense in person; but over the internet, I can't be bothered to sort through what you're trying to say. Just leaving your finger off the shift key when you type would be a big improvement. You're 17, you know how to spell and form rational sentences, so do it.

-leave the asian avenue talk on asian avenue. there arent that many asian/black thugs here that can interpret all of what you say.... well, beside azianRyceBoi and grant :D and get the crack-smoking hamster off of the caps lock too

-use periods. i read messages out loud and start to get light headed when i read yours

if you are getting an S, don't be expecting more power cuz your mom's corolla has the same amount. oh yah, just some quick math:

assuming insurance is $7000 for you (say you go under your mom's corolla like i'm doing right now) and you're making $1200 a month (i think that's right... correct me if i'm wrong tho! :D)

then

$7000 / $12000 = 5.83333333 months. or 6 months.

so that's 6 months of work JUST to pay off insurance. ouch.

let's say you use 30 bux of gas a week (i don't know the mileage for an S or SR so this is for a VERY conservative SRV).

$30 x 52 = $1562 per year

so gas and insurance is gonna cost you 7 months of pay per year. ouch.

Assuming that will be the case you will still be spending about 7 month of your pay cheque a year on gas and insurance. You'll be just eating a loaf of bread a day like someone i know, the budget only allowed $1 on food and he goes to some street races some times but can't afford a far location and to race more than once or twice cuz he can't afford the gas. It's just sad I'm telling ya. And is that pay before or after taxes? Since you're not a full time student right now you have different tax exemptions than full time students. Watch out for that too.

was that 3500 a year or for half a year? insurance companies sometimes try to screw around with your head like that...

you're right about it being cheaper. like i said, right now i'm doing the same thing. i'm under the corolla and my mom's under the lude but i'm still paying an insane amount of money for insurance.

also, you haven't even gotten your G2 yet. worry about getting that first. afterwards get used to driving in the corolla before you attempt to buy your own car. having not enough money for insurance is already not good... getting into an accident with no money to pay for the deductible is even worse

Lude_Behaviour

Why don't you just let your mother be principle driver on both cars? She can tell the insurance company that one car is for work the other for Sunday drives to church. I use to do this a few years backwhen I was in highschool and my first 2 years of University. My father insured both my lude and his pontiac. There was no problems until after about 4 years I got into an accident with the lude and it was my fault. Insurance paid the claim but raised deductibles and gave us an ultimatum: either I sign a clause stating I cannot drive any of my dads cars or I must be added to the insurance.

I decided to change the ownership of the lude to my own name and have insurance on my own. Mind you it was more expensive in the beginning as I had never owned insurance but I still avoided paying alot in my teen years where money was harder to come by. This will work 100%, why let the insurance company rape you if you can avoid it.

Problem solved

stolen is stolen, scratched is scratch, doesn't matter who drives it unless it was the thief. What if it was stolen on your driveway at home? The insurance company is gonna ask who drove the car last? I don't think so~!

Take a close look at the insurance policy first. Some companies actually won't covered male drivers under the age of 25, if they're name isn't included under the policy.

Now if you excuse me, I'm gonna go take some Tylenol. I got a headache from trying to read most of LudebOye's posts.

hehe.. i feel kidna bad busting your bubble all the time, but most insurance companies won't allow one person to be insured under multiple cars if there is someone else in the household that is able to drive.

for example if your mom was insured under both the lude and corolla and you're the only other driver, then you would have to be insured under one of those cars. if you had another driver in the house like your dad and he wasn't under another car, then you could have him under the lude and you as an occasional on the cars. so basically if you have 2 cars and 2 people, you're under one of them no matter what. if you have 3 people and 2 cars then you don't have to be the primary driver for either.

my sister finally got her license so now i'm an occasional driver on the lude which makes it kinda cheaper, but not much.

and your posts are improving! i actually see punctuation besides ?!?!?! and #@%#@%#$^$#!@^# :D

A little creativity is in order!!! When the broker asks your mom if there are any other licensced drivers in the household tell her to say no. I have never ever heard of any insurance company rufuing to insure 2 cars under the same name with 1 principal driver. Just change the address on your licence to a relatives house so that you butt is safe if anything should happen. If cops pull you over just say your borrowing your moms car.

I know of alot of people who are doing this. If you would like PM me and i'll give you the name and number of a few companies where this type of situation could be enacted. Vince is right some companies do have such a policy, but not many on which I have encountered.

Good luck

Ok i can help u on this subject. I'm the closest to ur age i'm 19 and i own a 1992 SR. Ur gonna need to make at least 600 a month to get by. u might need to get a new job 1200 a month full time is garbage. I make 1500 after tax and i only work at most 30 hours a week. For me to be able to keep my car i have to make at least 500 a month. Thats 300 for insurance 100 bucks for gas and 100 a month on the side for repairs. The other part of my paycheck goes towards school/mods/clothes/investment. Its gonna be hard to keep a car and go to school at the same time. I havd this car for about a year now(got it when i was 18). I was a full time highschool studen and working. All i have to say is always have at least 1000 in ur account incase something goes wrong. If i had to do it over again i would have waited to get my car this year beacuse i could have gotten an SRV which is better. One thing i suggest is do not take a loan ur only 17-18 you don't need a debt at the age. I also suggest save up enguht money to pay off your car and one year insurance in one shot. If u have any other question just ask.
