Bell To Replace Gascoyne
15/10/03
Bob Bell will replace Mike Gascoyne as Renault’s Technical Director.

It was confirmed on Wednesday that Gascoyne had left Renault for Toyota, and Flavio Briatore has moved quickly to fill the gap - although, in truth, he’s had plenty of time to plot his next move as Gascoyne’s departure had been expected for months.

Bell is considered the natural successor to Gascoyne having been the Rottweiler’s deputy since 2001.

"We thank Mike for his excellent work, his contribution to our success so far and wish him well for the future," Briatore said. “We are delighted to offer Bob Bell the role of Technical Director.

"The entire technical team has done an outstanding job developing our car over the past two years, and we have made impressive progress. Our programme has been built up carefully, putting the right people in place, and I have every confidence that Bob's technical experience and managerial skills will be a major asset for the future."

-- What this means is just as I've been saying all along. Gascoyne was the reason for Jordan's rise in 1999 and Renault's recent resurgence. Toyota will make leaps in the next few years, while I believe Renault will remain a 4th or 5th best team.
