Now only if we can get Ofallon Police department to do the same, hell ST. Charles county police department. i have a list of people to have there car crushed. I think that any step is a good step to cut down street racing, but smashing a car is not a law ( law # 3652 :we must crush every street racers car!!! bla bla bla) A police department can do whatever they want to seized property, smashing it was just more fun. maybe that might get a message across???? Thanks for the info Keith i am going to send that video to my neighbor, he is accually the police chief of the Ofallon Police Department.

Awesome! They should do this in the owner's front yard. That would really teach them.

Sorry, but that's ridiculous. If someone shoots someone, do you cut off their hand that pulled the trigger?

Jailtime for putting others lives in jeopoardy - yes. Destroying someone's personal possession - no.

Furthermore, the article makes quite a big deal of 8 people in California dieing from "street racing related incidents" in the past year. I think that's being blown way out of proportion. More than 10 people a year die from coconuts falling on their heads. I'm not kidding. Let's crush the coconuts!

Marc is right. Street Racing is a problem, but not an epidemic. My heart goes out to the families that have lost loved ones to the dumbasses out there that think they are fast. But think about it, drunk driving is infinitly times worse but we don't crush their cars. Street Racing is something that is in you, sometimes the only way to get it out is to just do it. Like Al said, I used to street race like it was going out of style, unbeknown to me it was. Let's face he has gone through a sh** load of cars so do you think that the police impounding his car would of made him stop, my guess NO(just an example, please don't take offense Al). Also, Keith street racing also includes "spirited driving". Do you really think cops care the difference between the two.

i hate cars being crushed. The dukes of hazzard show was bad enough on '68 - '70 chargers for when I go to restore one in the future. What about when they decide to move on to other cars in their crushing that i or others may want to restore down the road.

I mean yeah, do something about the street racing, but not crushing the cars. Hell you could break thermometers in their hands and make them rub it in their hair, but save the cars.

(if anyone gets the movie that line is from, cool)

That plan seems like its intended to get attention for people who are against street racing rather than deterring the people that do it.

I dont like the idea at all. Id be for revoking drivers licenses for drunk driving for a span of years before destroying the owners car. I would prefer a fine of the same value of the car. Do they destroy the car of someone who is talking on their phone (illegally) and kills someone?

Total driving fatalities in California in 2002: 4,078
Total drunk driving fatalities in California in 2002: 1,612 (%40 of driving fatalities)

If there were 4,000 driving fatalities in 2004, the percentage of street racing fatalities would be %0.2. Maybe they should get serious about deterring drunk driving.

I think it is more punishment for the person to see their car in front of their house everyday and know that it is there fault that they aren't able to drive it.
The police could punish the person by installing a GPC locator at the drivers expense, that way everytime a leaf touches the car the police would know decreasing the likely hood that the person would go out late night cruising for a race.
There are so many alternatives that the possibilities are endless, but it does seem more of a publicity stunt by the police department to crush cars.

Joining Hahn for the demonstration were City Council members Dennis Zine, a former police officer, and Wendy Greuel, whose district has been the site of several street races in recent years, particularly after the movie "2 Fast 2 Furious" and its sequel.

...wasn't 2 fast 2 furious THE sequel? lol

thats the first thing that went through my mind when I read the article... publicity... now what the eff are they gonna do with the carcass? recycle it? it'll probably end up in a landfill or something lame like that... I'm with bill when he said that people may wanna fix it up or something some day... why do we have to CRUSH everything?

the coconut anology was good too, marc!

The idea is a scare tactic. Typically, people controlled by fear don't stay under control for very long.

I think that this is kind of a silly proposition. Who's to say that they were "racing"? What if the person was just enjoying the acceleration of their car? I know that I've I've been pulled over for flooring my car(s) on more than one occasion, just to feel it, and I'd bet that most of you do it every now and then. I know that if a LEO saw us in a bout of "spirited driving" he would call it racing, and he'd probably be handing out citations like candy to kids on Halloween.

Personally, I think it puts far too much power in the LEO's hands.

here we go again with spirited driving,...this law just shows how ridiculous their getting. They talk like street racing has JUST NOW became an epidemic in Cali. Leave it to California to make up some stupid law like that. Jailing someone is one thing,...destroying their personal property is immoral and unethical.
