Avatar is the little picture that's to the left right under user name. You see that weird purple swirl thing, that's my avatar. Now to put an avatar you go to your "user cp" and go to edit profile. Scroll down and you'll see a button that say change avatar. Click it and then you can either choose to upload a file or use a url. I tried using the url but some funky thing happened and I had to opt for uploading.

It doesn't tell you until you try and upload something bigger, but the max size is 75x75 pixels. There's also a 20k size limit for those that like multiframe gif files.

D'oh I meant edit options not edit profile. Last option on that screen.
