View Full Version : 520 chain and sprocket conversion done. Holy crap!
Put on my -1/+2 sprocket conversion today and WOW is it stronger. Took care of the mid range that my bike lacked and added to the already super strong top end. Best mod I've done yet by far!
For those who dont know bikes, I guess it'd be like putting 4.10 gears and a flywheel in a v8 car. Although instead of topping out at 100mph I'm probably down to 165mph or so, lol.

Is it a DIY kind of job? How much was it?
I would love to have a short FD in either cars.

yea, had to replace the front and rear sprockets, no biggie. I have a rear wheel stand so getting the back tire off is simple and my friend has a tool for removing the stock chain and putting the new one on was easy too.

Nice... do you have to update your speedo too?

Yeah, but now you can't go 23425 mph.
On a serious note, did the bike really need to be faster :P
When I did Formula SAE, we used a Honda F4I engine and made our own rear sprockets (usually on a water jet) for the diff in the car. Generally we had a few different ones with different amounts of teeth to play with acceleration versus shifting frequency (top speed wasn't really a concern). We had to pull the chain apart and put it back on all the time as we built the cars, so I got quite familiar with greasy chains :(

Most people don't bother correcting the speedo.
my speedo is reading about 13% high right now. I ordered my "speedohealer" last week so it should be here any day. I agree with Al that most people dont correct it, which is retarted since you will be putting extra miles on your bike that arent really there.
FormulaRedline, the bike was very fast to begin with so to answer your question; no, it doesnt need to be any faster. Mostly what I like about the sprocket is that it gives me much more useable power for street riding.
Last track day for the year is Oct 12th which I wont quite be ready for but I plan on tracking the bike starting next year. woohoo!
Just do test the track on the 12th thats what I plan on doing. Granted my bike isn't very fast but thats ok it gives me time to work on my form.

Damn, good luck with tracking it. I'd be scared as hell to do that.

ehh, I thought about it but your limited to 100mph and have to stay behind a leader. My friend did it last time and said he got bored. I might do it for the hell of it since its only $30 but I definitely plan on doing full track days starting next year...need leathers first though lol
Yeah I have to pick up a set of gauntlets for the test the track. I might see about borrowing a bike from work just to have something a little faster to ride.

thats cool, what kind of bike? 1125R? You dont actually have to wear leathers for the "test the track", just two pairs of jeans and a riding jacket
I'm gonna see if they will let me borrow the 1125cr if I don't buy one before then.

I did the -1/+2 on mine when I had it. It made every gear afterwards pull like the lower gear pulled before changing sprockets.
What's the idea behind the 520 chain conversion?
