Now with some video. I love how it looks like Massa is struggling to see over the steering wheel... lol, he's so short.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m4NcHNLrxcc

Can we please see what needs to be done to embed a video? Or can someone tell me why I can't seem to get it to work?

Re: Ferrari 599XX (inspired by Al)

I was hunting down a 550 Maranello, they are "cheap" Ferraris, but my wife convinced me while I could "drive" it daily I could never park it anywhere...

My friend Ray in Ohio collects these with his dad and brother.... the have more than a few of them..... nice to have friends.....*smile*

yes, they would be legal, perhaps not in the US, but they would be legal.

Ferrari would only sell these to certain known customers. They are very funny about that. The really good stuff YOU could not buy from them, even if you were waving more than asking in front of them.

When total production is very low you can pick and choose who gets what.

That said I am sure if you were lucky enough to be one of the chosen they would fit the car to you and make sure it was personalized for you.

I had 3 "common" [ read high number of units ] Ferraris in the '70s. I got them real cheap because they just were not that good and had issues. I sold them for much more than I paid for them and thought I was pretty slick. Oh if I had only hung on to them!!!! Hind sight is always 20-20

Re: Ferrari 599XX (inspired by Al)

They had a similar deal with the Enzo. You had to have owned a certain number of Ferraris for them to even consider selling one to you and even then it is more of an application to buy one, they reserved the right to decline the sale for what ever reason.

I saw on Top gear the other day that even if you 'buy' an FXX, they don't actually give you the car. They keep it in storage and when you want to take it to a track, they will get it there so you can drive it. I found that hard to believe... but it seems to fit in line with this culture they have built around the car.

James, what models did you have? Tell me it was a Daytona... please tell me it was a Daytona. Or a 512 Berlinetta... If it was either of those... drool...

I have been playing around with the idea of looking for an old 308, those things are a dime a dozen and can be picked up now for relatively cheap. It seems that a good one is accessible for around $35k or so. But like all cars like that, being able to afford the car and being able to afford the maintenance is two different things. No to mention the fact that the wife would NEVER even let me seriously concider it.

1 Fiat Dino Coupe
2 365 GTB/4 Coupe

At the time I was fixing/detailing cars for doctors and other well off folks. I used to chase cars they wanted to buy. I'd locate and inspect then make a deal and they would get what they wanted and I got 10% of final price.

I saved that money until I could buy my own. The Dino set me back $3.3k. My insurance agent at the time could not find a Fiat Dino listed so he insured it as a 124 coupe. After I had the policy in hand I brought it round for him to see. I about died on the spot... It was a vette killer...

The first 365 was $6k, it needed a lot of work, I spent 4 yrs on it. The second was $12k and it was perfect. I used to have to carry a spare set of plugs in the glove box in case I had to idle at a light too long.

I bought and sold and these taught me that it is better to drive someone else's than own your own.

Ray offered me his aunt's Mondial Cabrio a couple years back. $13k. Cheap right? It needed the timing belts changed. Dealer quoted $22k for the job.....Yes, you read that correctly, $22k. I passed on it and it went to a dentist in Puerto Rico.

I like my Vibe just fine.

If you want to get a Ferrari let me know, Ray has an ear to the ground and is always offered things... 308s are okay if i were going to get one I'd go for the 308 GT4. $20k would find an okay one $30k would find an excellent one. I am sure one could be had for the mid teens.

I wish they were as cheap now as they were then...

Re: Ferrari 599XX (inspired by Al)

Soooo jealous of the 365... I LOVE that car.

If I were ever to get one, it would end up being a garage queen. I'd drive it like once a year and just rub it with a diaper the rest of the time. But I unfortunately have some other priorities going on now... and probably for a while to come. Maybe when I retire!

And I like the Mondial Coupes... it's a hella old man Ferrari, but it's still a Ferrari... The $22k service doesn't surprise me one bit.

Re: Ferrari 599XX (inspired by Al)

if you want something with a Ferrari engine but not a Ferrari get an Alfa Romeo GVT6.
they had 3.0 and 3.5 liter Ferrari V-6 engines...

They can be had for cheap, there is a fellow on St. Charles Rock Rd. who has a number of them....

I am a bit different than most folks, if I have to let something sit in the garage and not drive it, then it is time to go... taxes insurance and the fact that the more these sit the more that needs to be done to them is an issue. There is a fellow who works for A-B InBev who drives a 550 Maranello daily. He has a ton of miles on it.

Of course when you think about it, he has lost a ton of value in it drive it or not. They were like $200k or so new and I have seen them as cheap as $40k with 18k miles on them...

I highly recommend an Alfa over a Ferrari...

Looks like that post was removed. That $8500 figure seems too low though. Mmmmm...308. I'd have to rock a 'stache and Hawaiian shirt if I get one of those.

Re: Ferrari 599XX (inspired by Al)

proper pricing would be around $22k, though I have seen them in the low teens.
the 30k service done sounds good but it would have depended on how long ago it was done, if more than 5 yrs ago time to redo.....
